DAS Study Visits: Bursary for Curators
Founded in 1975, the Decorative Arts Society (DAS) is a
charity which encourages and supports the study and appreciation of all aspects
of the decorative arts and design from 1850 to the present. The Society’s
activities include architecture, interior and industrial design and the graphic
arts. As part of its remit, it organises overseas study visits once or twice
each year.
Support to Curators
The Society’s Committee of Governors wishes to help decorative
arts curators take part in these events, in order to extend the knowledge and
contacts of the individuals and to strengthen the link between museums, their
staffs and the Society. In 2012 it agreed a new policy of allocating funds for
bursaries which are intended to cover all or most of the cost of participation.
Czech Republic Bursary
The next DAS Bursary is to be made available for the 2014 study visit to the Czech Republic from 5-10 May 2014 which will
begin and end in Prague. Its theme will concentrate on early twentieth century
architecture and decorative arts. The
itinerary includes Brno for the Decorative Arts Museum and the Tugendhat,
Stiassny and Jurkovic villas and the Karl Reissig House; Brtnice for the Josef Hoffman museum; Svijany for the
Ottendorfsky Library, and Litomysl to include the Vachal house. Other planned
destinations are Nove Mesto nad Metuji with its interiors that fuse baroque
with early 20th century and its unique arts and crafts garden; Castolovice
including its Art and Decorative Arts Museums; Kutna Hora and its new Museum of
Fine Arts, the cubist Bauer Villa , Villa Kotera with a collection of 20th
century ceramics and sculpture, and the 1850s Harrach house Hradek u Nechanik with intact
period furniture; and Liberec with its Decorative Arts Museum.
The award is intended to cover a substantial proportion of the
costs of the study visit including accommodation during the visit and travel to
and from the Czech Republic but the successful applicant would need to find
some limited expenditure. If awarded a grant by the Society, the applicant
would be expected to provide an article for the DAS Newsletter describing the trip.

work.
