Free course for curators!

Navigating the Art Market

A short course for curators developed by Sotheby’s Institute of Art in partnership with the Art Fund.

When: Online from beginning of November 2013 AND One-day seminar on 6 December 2013
Where: Sotheby’s Institute of Art (for one-day seminar)
Who: Early career curators interested in gaining a practical understanding of the art market, and more experienced curators wishing to refresh their knowledge
Cost: Fully-funded (including lunch)

This fully-funded course is designed to provide early career curators, and curators interested in developing their collecting ambitions, with a relevant, practical understanding of the workings of the art market.

The course combines on-line learning with a one-day seminar at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London on Friday 6 December.

The four on-line sessions will be available for curators to access at any time during a one month period and will cover themes such as:

·        An Introduction to the Art Market
·        Auction houses and how to buy at auction
·        How the Galleries, Dealers, Art Fairs and Collectors operate
·        Resources for the Art Market

The subsequent one-day seminar will give participants a chance to review and discuss the online content, ask questions, and lastly build relationships with new contacts through facilitated visits to commercial galleries and auction houses in the afternoon.  These visits will be arranged according to the specialisms and interests of the curators taking part in order to make them as fruitful as possible.

Feedback from participants on last year’s course includes:

It was amongst the most effective [courses] I have been on, both in terms of content and format, and I will certainly use what I have learnt in my work from now on.
It has given me more confidence in approaching and visiting galleries and auction houses.

This course is fully-funded by the Art Fund in partnership with Sotheby’s Institute of Art.  This does not include transportation to/from the seminar in London, however if you or your organisation cannot cover travel costs please contact us to discuss this further.

Places on the course are limited to 30 curators, and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

For more information, and to book your place please contact Penny Bull, Programmes Manager (Acquisitions), by email pbull@artfund.org, or   020 7225 4815.
